The best sandwich shop in VA!

December 20, 2019

Proud to be representing the entire state of Virginia on LoveFood’s list of “Best Sandwich Joint in Every US State (and DC)”!

“The self-professed ‘sandwich nerds’ at this no-frills shop pride themselves on their homemade offerings. They’ve been serving them up in generous proportions since 2005, delighting punters with simple yet delicious creations. Plump for turkey breast with cranberry relish on grilled multigrain bread, or pork loin, chipotle mayo and French fries all cased within ciabatta. Veggies will love the breaded eggplant concoction too.”

The Best Springtime Activities in Washington D.C.

April 10, 2018

Spring in Washington, D.C., means many opportunities to enjoy time outdoors. As the cool winter weather leaves and warmer temperatures come, the community starts to come alive. Grab your calendar and take note of some of the best things to do in Washington, D.C., as you plan the next few months!

Attend the Cherry Blossom Festival

The cherry trees in Washington are some of the most famous trees in the world, and in the spring they burst to life with brilliant pink colors, bringing people from around the country to experience the fragrant and colorful display. The Festival runs throughout the month of April with special events all month long. The National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade is scheduled for April 14th this year.

Head to the Farmer’s Market

The Dupont Circle FreshFarm Markets are starting to come to life after the long winter. The farmer’s market is held year round, but the produce starts showing up in April. It is held every Sunday from 8:30 to 1:30. In addition to veggies and fruits, pick up fish, cheese and hand-crafted items. Some of the more unique, but popular items at the market include District-made spirits and beers, pickles, fresh pasta and locally roasted coffees. Plan to stay for lunch and enjoy wood-fired pizza or a variety of soups, sandwiches and ethnically diverse food choices.

Attend the Anacostia River Festival

On April 15 from 1 to 5, head to the 11th Street Bridge Park for the Anacostia River Festival. Technically part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, this serves as the closing of the events and a celebration of the Anacostia River. Enjoy a canoe ride on the river, take part in a bike parade, spend time with your family playing lawn games and see displays from local artists.

Watch the Nationals Play

Spring also marks the start of baseball season, and the Washington Nationals are your local team and the National League East champions for 2016 and 2017. Catch a game sometime in the spring at Nationals Park, and welcome summer with America’s favorite pastime.

As you can see, there’s plenty to do in Washington, D.C. in the spring. Keep your calendar open, because you’re going to want to fill it with many of these activities.

P.S. Don’t forget to stop in to fuel up before or after your adventures! Check out our menu here.

Holiday Cocktails You Need to Try!

November 15, 2017

The holiday season means time to finally sit back and relax with family. For some, it may bring increased stress as they prepare to host family and other events. Whether you’re ready to relax or need something to take the edge off your stress, here are some holiday cocktails you’ll want to try.

Candy Cane Cocktail

Nothing says “Christmas” quite like the sweet peppermint taste of a candy cane. Mix equal parts vanilla rum, peppermint schnapps and white chocolate liqueur to recreate this taste in a tempting cocktail.

Hot Buttered Rum

Cold weather means you want something hot in your hands. Mix together 2/3 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon cloves, then mix it with 1/4 cup honey, one stick unsalted butter and a dash of salt. Top with rum and boiling water, stirring until it all dissolves. You’ll love the taste of this festive and warm mixture!

Mulled Wine

Apple cider is a popular drink of the holidays. Mix 4 cups of it with one bottle of your favorite read wine. Add 1/4 cup honey, 2 sticks of cinnamon, the zest and juice from one orange, 4 cloves and 3 star anise. Boil the mixture, then simmer for 10 minutes. Serve hot for a spicy mulled wine.

Cranberry Punch Pizzazz

Cranberries seem to go hand-in-hand with Christmas. For this cocktail make a spice bag out of cotton cheese cloth. Add 4 broken cinnamon sticks, 12 cloves, and 8 pinched cardamom pods. Tie the cloth closed to make a bag, and add to a crock pot. Add a can of frozen cranberry juice concentrate, 4 cups of white wine and 1/3 cup honey. Add the water recommended on the can of frozen juice. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours, then serve!

Are you ready for some holiday entertaining and relaxation? Grab one of these recipes to add some festive and tasty fun to the mix!

Our 5 Favorite Fall Things to Do in Arlington, Virginia

October 5, 2017

Fall in Arlington is gorgeous. From the fall festivals and pumpkin patches to the red, orange and yellow leaves on the trees surrounding the community, there’s always something fun and interesting to do in the area. Here are some of our favorite fall events in and around Arlington.

  1. Take the Family to Cox Farms

Cox Farms, located about 30 minutes away in Centreville, is the place for fall fun. At Cox Farm, you can see farm animals, soar down massive slides, climb through tunnels made from hay, head into a monster themed maze, shop for farm trinkets and treats, and even give the kids the chance to tackle some farm chores. If your crew is a little older, Fields of Fear, located at Cox Farm, takes you into the back 40 to be entertained by ghouls and goblins.

  1. Virginia Wine Festival

The Virginia Wine Festival brings live music, craft exhibitors and the best wineries together in one place. If beer is more your style, craft beer trucks will be on hand. This is the oldest wine festival on the East Coast, and this year it’s being held in Old Town Alexandria in mid-October.

  1. Scottish Days at the Carlyle House

The Carlyle House is the oldest stone house in Alexandria. In Mid-October, it will host Scottish Heritage Day. Enjoy Scottish music, dancing and period fashion on a visit to this Alexandria icon. If you haven’t toured, this is a great time to see the house.

  1. Halloween Pumpkin Hunt

The Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden hosts an annual Halloween Pumpkin Hunt. Bring your kids in costume to the museum on the Saturday before Halloween to enjoy crafts, a costume parade, costumed characters, spooky stories, drinks, refreshments and a hunt for toy-filled pumpkins on the grounds.

  1. Do Some Leaf Peeping

Arlington’s fall foliage is legendary, so be sure to plan some time to take a drive and do some “leaf peeping.” The drive along the Potomac is one of the most picturesque during the fall. Fort Ward Park, Monticello Park and Jones Point Park area also stunning as the season progresses. Grab some extra to take home and do fall crafts with the kids!

Whether you’re looking for something to do with the kids, want to have some grown-up fall fun or simply want to enjoy the colors of the season, Arlington never disappoints. Your biggest challenge will be deciding what to do, as you will have a tremendous amount of options!

Homemade Rice Pudding

September 15, 2017

Ah…doesn’t it just remind you of being a kid over at your grandma’s house on a chilly, fall afternoon? Rice pudding, sometimes overlooked for the gem that it is, is one of the most delicious desserts! And, fortunately, it has recently made a comeback and is popping up all over the place like popular New York restaurants, trendy dessert bars in London and at Earl’s!

This cozy comfort food is really easy to make and isn’t as unhealthy as you may think. You can always reduce the sugar amount or substitute with Stevia.

With fall right around the corner, we thought it would be the perfect time to add it to our daily menu!

If you’re the adventurous type and want to make it at home, here’s a yummy recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cups cooked rice
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Additional milk, optional

Directions:

  1. Place rice and raisins in a greased 1-qt. casserole. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar and nutmeg; pour over rice.
  2. Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 45-50 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool. Pour milk over each serving if desired. Refrigerate leftovers. This should make about 4-6 servings
  3.  Enjoy!
